This story has no beginning. No action scene that raises 30 questions, meant to draw the reader in. No, i dont have that. I will simply burst in somewhere near the beginning, hopefully raise a thousand questions. (And with luck i will only answer half.) Well, now that ive told you, lets start not at the beginning.

Chapter 1

Theres not much to do on Saturday. Well, at least not for me. All the other kids go to the park or the mall. They have fun. But not me. I rarely leave the house, my mothers' rules. She says its to protect me, but its just to protect our secret.
I sat in the window, a striped cushion beneath me, my knees drawn up to my chest, my chin on my knees, my arms wrapped around my legs. I stared out the window, sighing as two kids rode past on bicycles. We had a black wrought iron fence around our property. It stretched far behind the house and in front of the house it stopped about a foot from the sidewalk. Sharp points topped the slats, threatening to impale anything that dared climb over.
I almost jumped when i heard the door open, i was so absorbed in my thoughts. the door always creaked because whenever Mom offered to oil the hinges i refused. I would always be able to tell when someone came in . . . through the door. I looked to see my mother, hand on the doorknob, eyes wide. she crossed the room in three, maybe four, strides and gripped my arm. She yanked me off the window seat with more force than necessary. She let me go and drew the dark curtains over the window. "How many times do i have to tell you, dont sit in the window!" her voice was firm and hard. i scuffled ove rto my bed and sat down.
"Im sorry." i mumbled.
she sighed, walking over and stroking my platinum blonde hair.
"I dont want you to get hurt." she siad.
"I wont Mom." i promised.
She sighed again, kissed my cheek, and left the room, closing the door, leaving me in the shadowy room. The house was full of shadows, Mom felt safe with them. I, on the otherhand, despised them, unless it was an emergency in which i had to hide. Then i was thankful for the shadows. But today was not one of those times, and i hated the murky blackness, drifting from one end of the manor to the other.
One of the things I hated most, was how the shaodws were always changing, never keeping a certain form. I swung my legs over onto the bed and stared up at the ceiling. When the door creaked open again, i expected to see my mother, but the person i i saw sent me backing into the farthest corner, growling. The man laughed. he had black hair, dark eyes, and was dressed in black jeans, a black t-shirt, and a black leather jacket.
"Now Ava -" he began but i cut him off with a snarl.
He shook his head and strode over to a pair of armchais in front of the small fireplace. No fire burned. He sat down in the chair to the right. I reluctantly shuffled over to the left armchair and lowered myself into it.
"Ava -" i began to cut him off again but he held up his hand. An order for silence. I obeyed, for now. he began again, "Ava, your mother tells me you've been sitting in the window, staring out at the neighborhood."
I nodded. He sighed.
"Youve recently turned fourteen?"
i nodded again.
"Then your old enough to go on your first hunt."
My lip curved up in a silent snarl. He pretended not to notice.
"Then your vulnerable, too young to defend yourself. Stay away from the windows. I dont want to loose you."
I burst.
Leaping up i shouted, "Dont tell me what to do! Cont pretend to care!"
"Ava!" he tried to bring me back under control. "I dont pretend to care! I love you."
He had poured the gasoline and he had just tossed the burning match into it with that last comment. My temper exploded.
"Thats what you told Mom! Then you left! You didn't love her! You were just using her! And now your using me! I hate you! I HATE YOU! Youve never cared! Just go away!"
I flung myself across the room and collapsed on the bed, sobbing into my pillow. My arms curled around my head, my whole body shuddering with the force of my tears.
If id have looked, i would have seen shock on his face. But i didn't look. I didn't hear him get up but i heard the door open and close. the creaks were different and i knew them by heart. I didn't move from the bed, didn't move from my position. Just lay there crying until there were no more tears.
